Quick start - the first connection to the radio
There are two ways to choose from. A - OmniRig: one radio, Windows, the fewest settings. B - HamlibStarter: several radios, Linux, or WSJT-X on a different radio than the log.
Before you start (for both ways)
- Connect the radio and switch it on. A USB cable from the radio to the computer. The first time, Windows may need a driver from the radio manufacturer (Icom, Yaesu and Kenwood have them on their websites).
- Check the COM port number. Right-click the Start button → Device Manager →
Ports (COM & LPT). The radio shows up e.g. as Silicon Labs CP210x (COM5). Write the number down.
Some radios create two ports (e.g. Yaesu FTDX101, FT-991A). Control usually uses the port marked Enhanced - check the radio manual. - Check the CAT speed in the radio. The radio menu has an item like CAT RATE or CI-V Baud Rate (e.g. 38400). The same value must be set later in the middleman.
- Close programs that may hold the radio port - e.g. the manufacturer's software or another logging program. If you do not know which one it is, Diagnostics will help (COM Ports tab).
A. OmniRig - one radio, Windows
- Install the free OmniRig program (author's website:
dxatlas.com/omnirig). - In RigAndLog open the Rig window: the Rig button in the log.
- In the Rig window click Menu → RIG (TRX) configuration. In the Rig - radio sources window tick OmniRig (Rig 1, Rig 2).
- Click OmniRig settings. In the OmniRig window, on the Rig 1 tab: choose the radio type (Rig type), the COM port and the speed (Baud rate) - the same as in the radio menu. Leave the rest. Click OK.
- In the radio sources window click OK.
- In the Rig window click ≡ at the beginning of the upper row (MAIN) and in the OmniRig part click Rig 1.
- After a few seconds the row shows the radio name and frequency. Turn the dial on the radio - the number in the window changes. Done.
WSJT-X next to it: in WSJT-X Settings → Radio: Rig = OmniRig Rig 1, PTT Method = CAT. OmniRig serves both programs at the same time.
B. HamlibStarter - several radios, Linux, WSJT-X on its own
- Download Hamlib. Hamlib is not included with the program. From the Hamlib project page (GitHub) download the Windows version,
e.g.
hamlib-w64-4.7.2.zip, unblock the file (right-click → Properties → Unblock) and unpack it to any folder. - Start HamlibStarter (it is in the RigAndLog program folder). Click the menu button in its window →
Configuration wizard.... The wizard first asks for the Hamlib library - point to the
rigctld.exefile in thebinsubfolder and click Check library. Then it guides you through the radio setup. You can also do it by hand: Configure Hamlib server. - In the Rigs Configuration window tick Enable Rig1 and click Configure next to it. Choose the Rig Model, the COM port, the Baud rate as in the radio menu and the PTT method (usually via CAT). OK.
- Check Rig 0 - shared port for programs: Port =
4532. Click OK. - In the HamlibStarter window the Rig 1 button should have a green LED - the radio server is running.
- In RigAndLog: Rig window → Menu → RIG (TRX) configuration → tick Hamlib and choose HamlibStarter client (Rig 1-4) → OK.
- In the Rig window: ≡ on the upper row → in the HamlibStarter part click Rig 1. The frequency appears after a moment.
WSJT-X next to it: in WSJT-X Settings → Radio: Rig = Hamlib NET rigctl,
Network Server = 127.0.0.1:4532, PTT Method = CAT. WSJT-X connects to Rig 0 - details on the
HamlibStarter page.
To let RigAndLog start HamlibStarter by itself: in the Rig - radio sources window click Configure (next to the Hamlib client) and tick Run Hamlib Starter to start the server if necessary. The second option closes HamlibStarter together with RigAndLog - only when RigAndLog was the one that started it.
The second radio
When the first radio works, you add the second one the same way (in OmniRig on the Rig 2 tab, in HamlibStarter as Rig2). Then in the Rig window: ≡ on the upper row → Show SUB - the lower row (SUB) appears. On it, ≡ → choose the second radio. More: Rig window.
