Radios - RigAndLog and HamlibStarter

Something does not work

First double-click the radio name or “Error” on the row display - a window shows what OmniRig or Hamlib reports. Below are the most common symptoms and what to do about them.

The row shows “ERROR”, and the details say: port busy / “Access denied” / “Port is not available”

The COM port of the radio is held by another program: a second rigctld, OmniRig, the radio manufacturer's software or another logger. One cable = one middleman. Close that program, or set it up to use OmniRig / Rig 0 instead of opening the port.

Who holds the port? Open Diagnostics → the COM Ports tab → More Info in the row of the radio port.

OmniRig: the row shows “ERROR”, and the details say “OmniRig does not respond”

The program could not connect to OmniRig. Usually the previous OmniRig is still closing (the program was started right after it was closed), or OmniRig runs as administrator and RigAndLog does not (or the other way round) - start both programs the same way, preferably normally. The program retries every 30 s by itself - once OmniRig starts, the row connects on its own.

“OmniRig is not installed” - install OmniRig or choose another radio in menu ≡.

The row shows “Initializing...” for a long time
The HamlibStarter buttons in the ≡ menu are greyed out

HamlibStarter is not running, or the classic client is chosen in the radio sources. Start HamlibStarter (or tick “Run Hamlib Starter to start the server if necessary” in the Hamlib client configuration) and in RIG (TRX) configuration choose HamlibStarter client (Rig 1-4). A Rig that is disabled in HamlibStarter is greyed out too.

The OmniRig buttons in the ≡ menu are greyed out

OmniRig is not ticked in RIG (TRX) configuration, or the program runs under Linux (Wine) - OmniRig is off there.

WSJT-X suddenly works on a different radio

A different Rig was chosen in HamlibStarter (Rig 0 switched to another radio), or the “MAIN also switches Rig 0 for other programs” option is on and you changed the radio in the upper row. See HamlibStarter.

HamlibStarter: “Conflict with another Rig - server not started”

Two Rigs (or a Rig and Rig 0) have the same port - also when one of them has “access from the network”. Change the port of one of them. The configuration window shows which Rig it collides with.

The VFO button shows “VFO ?”

The radio file in OmniRig does not report which VFO is active. The radio switches correctly - only the reading is missing.

OmniRig shows split, transmit, VFO or mode wrongly

Most often it is an error in the OmniRig radio file (.ini). Try the corrected file from the Rigs.7z archive - see OmniRig: corrected radio files.

The offsets in the Split window are grey

The chosen split (On the same radio / On two radios) cannot be switched on - the reason is at the bottom of the window. On the same radio: the MAIN radio has no split (its radio file in OmniRig has no Split / FreqB commands or Hamlib does not report split) or is not connected. On two radios: there is no second radio in the SUB row (≡ on the lower row).

The radio of the other row is greyed out in the ≡ menu

Split is on - swapping the radios between the rows is inactive then. Without split, choosing the radio of the other row swaps the radios (MAIN ⇄ SUB radio) - a radio can be in one row only. Split on one radio is done by the radio itself (Split → On the same radio).

After clicking Split the radios swapped rows

The SUB row was active. Split works on the MAIN row, so the program first moves the radio you work on to MAIN (the other radio goes to SUB). To go back: ≡ → MAIN ⇄ SUB radio with split off.

The VFO A and VFO B buttons are grey

Split is on. On the same radio VFO A receives (MAIN row) and VFO B transmits (SUB row) - switching A / B would cancel the split in the radio. On two radios both radios work on VFO A. Switch split off in the Split window (or with the SPLIT button on the radio).

With split my second radio is gone from the SUB row

Split On the same radio: the SUB row then shows VFO B of the MAIN radio (transmit). The second radio keeps working and comes back to the row when split is off. To transmit with the second radio, choose On two radios - SUB then transmits on MAIN + offset.

The Split button shows “SAT”

The SAT panel is open - when working satellites SUB transmits on the satellite uplink (with Doppler), not on MAIN + offset. Hide the panel (Menu → Satellites (SAT)) to use split again.

SAT panel: “Set My Grid in the LogBook configuration”

The program computes the satellite positions for your locator. Enter it in the LogBook configuration (My Grid) - the panel refreshes by itself.

SAT panel: no satellites, “No satellite data”

There are no files in the DATA\SAT folder next to the program, or they could not be downloaded. Click TLE (internet needed, it must not be locked in the configuration). You can also copy the files from another installation of the program.

The Doppler button is grey

No satellite is chosen, the locator (My Grid) is missing or no radio is connected. Choose a satellite and check that the MAIN (or SUB) row shows a frequency.

A QSO was saved without satellite data

When the QSO was saved, the SAT panel was hidden, the Log SAT LED was off, no satellite was chosen, or the QSO band was neither the uplink nor the downlink band (e.g. a WSJT-X QSO on another radio). See Satellites.

The log does not take the frequency from the radio

The Rig window is hidden (then the log works as if there were no radio), or the radio of the active row is not connected. Open the window with the Rig button in the log and check whether the row shows the frequency.

The radio was left transmitting

The program switches off only a transmission it switched on itself. Click the red TX button or switch transmit off on the radio. See Transmitting.

SWR is not shown while transmitting

SWR reading is switched off. OmniRig: Menu → OmniRig: radio models (extended functions, SWR) (the radio model must be chosen too). Hamlib: Hamlib client configuration → Advanced options → Check SWR.
