The most common symptoms and what to do about them. Click a question to expand the answer. Problems with connecting a radio are covered in the Radios - troubleshooting help.
Starting
Windows does not let the program or the installer start
A blue Windows protected your PC window: click More info → Run anyway. Before that, unblock the downloaded file (right-click → Properties → Unblock).
Windows 11 with the message Smart App Control blocked an app that may be unsafe: this feature blocks little-known programs and has no "run anyway" button. It can be switched off: Settings → Privacy & security → Windows Security → App & browser control → Smart App Control → Off. Note: once switched off, it cannot be switched back on without reinstalling Windows; the computer is still protected by Windows Defender and SmartScreen.
"The program is already running"
The program is already running in the background (e.g. its window is hidden or the previous closing is still in progress). Wait a moment and click Repeat the check. If that does not help - close the program in Task Manager or restart the computer.
"The program does not have permission to write to its folder"
The program keeps logs and configuration in its own folder. Do not install it in C:\Program Files. Move the whole folder e.g. to
C:\RigAndLog or use the installer (it installs into your user folder).
No .NET - the program does not start
The .NET 10 version needs Microsoft .NET 10 Desktop Runtime (x64 or ARM64 - matching the program version), the .NET 4.7.2 version needs .NET Framework 4.7.2 or newer. The installer asks for a missing component by itself; for the portable version download it from the Microsoft website.
Windows and appearance
A window disappeared or is off the screen
Menu → Window → Find window or Center all windows. This happens after disconnecting a second monitor.
Texts are cut off, too big or too small
Configuration → Appearance page → the Default values for 100% / 125% / 150% font scaling button matching your Windows scaling (Settings → System → Display → Scale). Then restart the program.
The program is slow
Switch off the options marked "It may reduce performance" on the LogBook → Appearance page (flags, coloring callsigns, the previous QSOs window), Enable visual styles on the Appearance page (weak computers, remote desktop) and, on the Programs page, the data of programs you do not use. Split a very big log into several (e.g. one per year).
A message about the GDI graphics object limit
The program is approaching the Windows graphics resource limit (usually after a very long session with many windows). Close unnecessary windows and restart the program.
QSOs
The QSO is not saved
- A field is red - rest the mouse pointer on the icon in the field to read what to correct (callsign, frequency or band, mode, date).
- Duplicated - this QSO is already in the log.
- In a contest: Contest is out of date - correct the contest dates (Change contest data) or go back to your normal LogBook.
QSOs deleted or damaged by mistake
Configuration → LogBook tools → Restore LogBook from backup - the program keeps 11 previous versions of every log (details).
The frequency is not taken from the radio
The Rig window must be open and the radio connected. Click Set updates from TRX and tick Update frequency from TRX - or press Ctrl+U when you need the frequency once.
Wrong QSO time (shifted by a few hours)
Check the Time in UTC option (LogBook → Appearance) and the Windows clock (time zone). With the option on, you enter UTC in the date field; with it off - local time. The log always stores UTC.
Internet, QRZ, clusters
QRZ returns no data
- Click Check QRZ username and password on the QRZ configuration page.
- A free account gives less data - see QRZ: free account.
- A message about too many queries - wait, get the data with the button.
- The program may be in no-internet mode (Lock clusters) - then QRZ does not work.
The spot list is empty or there is a red error at the bottom
Click the red text to see the details. Most often the service is temporarily unavailable or overloaded - try again later. Also check your internet connection and whether no-internet mode is on (the Unlock button).
A Telnet cluster keeps disconnecting
Your callsign is logged in to this server from another program. Add an SSID to the user name, e.g. SP4THK-2.
The Telnet console (Clusters) shows what the server answers.
QSOs from WSJT-X do not reach the log
- The UDP address and port in the LogBook (WSJTX page) must be the same as in WSJT-X (Settings → Reporting → UDP Server).
- A port can be read by one program only. When several programs need the WSJT-X data - use the UDP Hub.
- The UDP label at the bottom of the LogBook window shows whether data is arriving. Who is using the port can be checked in Diagnostics.
- Without Automatically accept and save WSJT-X/JTDX data the QSO waits in the entry fields for you to save it.
QSL cards by e-mail are not sent
Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo and iCloud require an app password. Use port 587. Click Send test... in the SMTP configuration - the error message tells you what to correct. Also look for test messages in the SPAM folder. See QSL cards.
Uploading to LoTW / Club Log fails
LoTW: check the path to tqsl.exe, the station location name (exactly as in TQSL) and the certificate password. Send one QSO with the TQSL
window visible (untick Hide LoTW dialog box) to see the message. Club Log: after an error, uploading is suspended - correct the
data (the application password!) and click Unlock sending to Club Log.
The propagation or QRZ page window is blank
The WebView2 component is missing or its cache is damaged. On the QRZ configuration page click Install WebView2 (if the button is visible; the propagation window has its own button) or, on the Misc page, Clear web browser cache. You can also open the QRZ page in the system browser (QRZ configuration page).
Other
Something does not work after the computer wakes up
After hibernation the internet and radio connections may be broken. The program suggests a restart by itself - agree once the network connection is back.
How to report a problem
- Describe what happened before the problem and what exactly happened (a screenshot helps a lot).
- Attach the program's work log from the
LOGS\LOG_RigAndLogfolder. More details are written when the program is started with theA_DEBUG_Mode.batfile from the program folder (diagnostic mode). - Send it with the Contact form (configuration, Misc page).
