Linux (Wine)
RigAndLog is a Windows program, but it runs under Linux in Wine - a layer that runs Windows programs. It also runs on a Mac in Windows under Parallels. This page describes the installation and the differences.
Which version to choose
| Version | What has to be installed in Wine |
|---|---|
| Portable .NET 4.7.2 | .NET Framework 4.8 via winetricks dotnet48 - the install_all.sh script in the program
folder does it for you. |
| Portable .NET 10 (x64) | .NET 10 Desktop Runtime for Windows x64 - winetricks does not have it, it has to be downloaded from the
Microsoft website and installed in Wine. The install_all_net10.sh script does it. |
Installation step by step
- Unpack the portable version into a folder inside the Wine prefix, e.g.
~/.wine/drive_c/RigAndLog(in Wine this is driveC:\RigAndLog). - Open a terminal in that folder and run the script:
- .NET 4.7.2 version:
bash install_all.sh- installs Wine, winetricks, fonts, .NET 4.8 and shortcuts; - .NET 10 version:
bash install_all_net10.sh- installs Wine, winetricks, fonts, downloads and installs .NET 10 Desktop Runtime and creates shortcuts.
apt) and ask for the administrator password (sudo). - .NET 4.7.2 version:
- Start the program with the shortcut on the desktop or in the application menu.
- On the first start the program detects Wine by itself. Open the configuration, Wine page - below.
Configuration → Wine page
This page is visible only under Wine.
- Drive mapping - for the program to open the Linux web browser or file manager, it has to know which Wine drive corresponds to which Linux
folder. Check it in
winecfg(the Drives tab) and enter the same, e.g.Z:\→/,C:\→/home/john/.wine/drive_c. Enter full paths - without~. Linux is case sensitive. - Open web browser - the browser choice and test buttons (local page, local page with a query, internet page).
- Test opening a folder in Wine / a file - works like "Show in Explorer".
- Check and uncheck options recommended or not recommended in Wine/Linux - sets the program options for Wine with one click.
- Replace Unicode characters unsupported by Wine with ¿? and Try to fix the Wine minimum window size bug. Regardless of this option, the F5 key refreshes the window and restores its minimum size; the LogBook window also has a Wine interface refresh button.
What works differently under Wine
- Radio: OmniRig is switched off under Wine. You connect the radio through Hamlib (HamlibStarter or the Linux
rigctld) - the Radios - examples help. - Time: there is no NTP synchronization from the program - Linux manages the clock.
- Audio recording is not recommended, and LoTW works as a beta - on the LoTW page you enter the command or path of the Linux TQSL.
- Maps: no animations; lines may look more angular. Synchronizing the map window position with the LogBook is not recommended.
- Appearance: some symbols are replaced with letters (e.g.
v/Xinstead of ✓ / ✗ in the QRZ column), small differences in drawing buttons. - Web pages and this help open in the Linux web browser.
